The study, conducted at the University of Melbourne, found that men who had used a medication known as ‘Viagra’ on an average once a day had a significant increase in hair count, compared with men who took a placebo. The researchers were able to find that the treatment had an additional 10% or less of the same effect. This was followed by a 10% or less increase in the percentage of hair lost by hair loss.
A group of men, aged 18 to 41 years, who had been treated with Viagra for more than three years had a significantly higher percentage of hair loss compared with a group of men who took a placebo. The study followed the results of a group of men who had been treated with an active form of the medication called tadalafil and had used it for about a year. The treatment group had not yet received any treatment or had any hair loss.
“It is an interesting finding, as we are only beginning to know of its potential benefits to patients,” said study author Dr. Sarah Thompson, MSc, Professor of Dermatology at the University of Melbourne.

Dr. Thompson said the results of the study showed that men who were previously treated with the medication have a greater chance of achieving hair regrowth and less need to take a daily dose of the medication. Thompson added that this could also be a sign of a more serious problem, which is the enlargement of the prostate gland of men with male-pattern hair loss. This has been a problem for the drug since it was first approved by the FDA for the treatment of prostate cancer in 1998.
“Although there is no known link between Viagra and prostate cancer, these two conditions are very close to each other.
